This album contains repertoire unusual for Beecham. The great conductor Furtwängler, who had been friends with Beecham since the 1930s, was scheduled to perform at the Royal Festival Hall in January 1955 at Beecham's invitation. However, Furtwängler passed away just before the concert in November 1954, so Beecham dedicated the concert to the memory of his close friend by performing the pieces he had planned to play with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
