Geophagus is a genus of cichlids that mainly live in South America as far south as Argentina and Uruguay, but a single species, G. crassilabris is from Panamá.

 They are found in a wide range of freshwater habitats. They are part of a group popularly known as eartheaters and mostly feed by picking up mouthfuls of sediment to sift out food items such as invertebrates, plant material and detritus. They are often kept in aquariums.

Geophagus pellegrini, is a stunning South American cichlid known for its vibrant coloration and unique sand-sifting behavior. Native to the Pacific Coastal drainages of Colombia, this species thrives in well-oxygenated waters with strong currents. It prefers a fine sand substrate, which allows it to exhibit its natural digging and foraging tendencies.

This peaceful yet slightly territorial fish reaches an adult size of 6–10 inches, with males developing a distinctive red-orange hue and a slight hump on their head. It is an omnivore, accepting a variety of frozen and prepared diets. While social when young, it can become territorial as it matures, especially during spawning.

Ideal for aquarists looking for an engaging and active species, Geophagus pellegrini does best in 50-gallon or larger aquariums with plenty of hiding spots among rocks and plants.
