A follow-up version was released a year later, re-titled 54-46 Was My Number. This version was one of the first Ska songs to receive widespread popularity outside Jamaica. It is regarded as also being the definitive reggae-song. It tells the story of Toots’ time in jail for the possession of marijuana.
It was released again in 1983 by the UK band Aswad & has been covered by many other artists since it’s’ release. These include Yellowman, Buju Banton & Byron Lee & The Dragonaires.
