This striking violet-brown stamp bearing the inscription “Deutsches Reich” and denomination “Hundert Mark” (100 Marks) hails from the turbulent German inflation period of the early 1920s. Issued around 1922–1923, it reflects the spiraling hyperinflation that gripped post–World War I Germany, when denominations increased almost weekly.
The ornate design features heavy Gothic script, decorative scrollwork, and bold numerals intended for easy recognition during a time when values changed rapidly. The stamp was printed by typography on unwatermarked paper and saw extensive postal use, as shown by the heavy cancellation.
For collectors, it belongs to the “Numeral and Garland” series, a key set documenting the economic collapse of the Weimar Republic. Its historical and numismatic resonance makes it a quintessential example of inflation philately.
