Issued in 1919 by the newly formed Republic of German-Austria (Deutschösterreich), this 2 heller newspaper stamp features the classical head of Mercury, the Roman messenger god, symbolizing swift communication and commerce. The elegant Art Nouveau frame and Gothic lettering embody early post-imperial Austrian design. Printed in ochre yellow on grayish paper, it was used specifically for mailing newspapers during the nation’s transition period after World War I. The design is by J. Renner, whose signature appears at the bottom.
