This late 19th century footwarmer would have been used when travelling in an unheated carriage
Similar warmers can be seen in Dutch paintings, they were also used in unheated rooms and churches.
It is made of a turned wooden (probably elm) drum with a swinging steel handle..
A copper dish fits into the middle, this has a brass lid
The centre of the lid has a small handle which lifts where hot water could be poured in.
