A stunning large antique print showing "The Patrol at Smyrna", based on a painting ("The Night Patrol at Smyrna") by French painter Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps. Published in the August 29, 1874 issue of The Illustrated London News, a UK publication that has been called the world's first news magazine.
Size: approx. 20.75 inches x 15.75 inches (52.71 cm x 40.01 cm), originally folded.
Decamps was a French painter considered one of the leading artists of Middle Eastern scenes (although he only actually visited the region once). His oil painting, on which this antique print is based, depicts nine men of a foot patrol accompanying the chief of police on his round of Smyrna (now Izmir in Turkiye), then the principal seaport of Asia Minor.
Careful repairs have been applied to preserve this antique print in good condition. Minor tears have been repaired with archival mending tissue, and the fold has been reinforced in the necessary places.
These is an original antique print, not a giclée print or modern reproduction! Bananastrudel sells only originals.
