Offenbach (1819-1880)
Description:
Offenbach's delightful operetta! The setting is Suzanne's room. Florestan, the composer, suddenly appears from the chimney. He had been hiding in the chimney on his way to escape from creditors and collectors. He hides under the bed, but then Suzanne and her friend Rosita arrive. Suzanne, a newlywed, has just had a post-nuptial quarrel with her husband Martel and refuses to let him in the room. She is surprised by the sudden intruder, Florestan, and asks him to leave, but the room is on a high place... How does this story end? Offenbach's one-act comic opera "The Evicted Husband" was staged at the Fiorentino Maggio Musicale (Florence May Festival) to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth. The satirical storyline is interspersed with Offenbach's typically delightful polkas, mazurkas, and waltzes. The piece is often performed in France, where it is very popular, but the music has been newly orchestrated for this production, making it even more colorful and enjoyable. The colorful equipment and costumes, which resemble birdhouses, further enhance the expressive singing of the four singers.
