Additional Details: This rare reproduction, titled Scene in an Inn, is drawn from a celebrated collection of Flemish and Dutch master drawings of the 15th–17th centuries preserved in the Albertina Museum. Published in London in 1930 by noted art historian and curator Campbell Dodgson, the work formed part of a limited edition portfolio of only 125 sets devoted to important Old Master drawings from the Albertina Collection.
Plate #17 captures a lively and psychologically charged tavern interior, where a woman forcefully defends herself against an intoxicated man while surrounding onlookers react with amusement, curiosity, or indifference. The composition reveals the remarkable observational skill and narrative sensitivity associated with Northern European genre drawing of the 17th century, where everyday life was rendered with both realism and subtle social commentary.
Executed after the original drawing in pen and bistre with bistre wash, the image demonstrates the fluid draftsmanship and tonal richness characteristic of Dutch and Flemish masters working in the tradition of artists such as Adriaen van Ostade and David Teniers the Younger. The expressive line work, atmospheric shading, and animated gestures create a vivid sense of movement and human interaction within the rustic interior.
Published during the pre-digital era using high-quality reproductive techniques, this piece reflects an important moment in early 20th-century art publishing, when carefully produced portfolios allowed collectors and scholars rare access to masterworks held in major European collections.
A sophisticated and historically engaging work, ideal for collectors of Old Master imagery, European genre scenes, and rare early 20th-century art publications.
